about

“Sandr Ok Snjár (feat. Naheli and Suvi)” is a song that uses ancient acoustic soundscapes and Old Norse poetry from “Hávamál,” or “Words of the High One,” to share universal wisdom from the Viking age on treating our healthy relationships with respect: that the road to seeing them is enjoyable no matter how long the distance; that mutual generosity and care are vital to sustaining fulfilling connections; to be a hospitable host when loved ones visit, and provide comfort and opportunities for us to share our experiences with each other.

lyrics

Hávamál 34, 41, 4:

Afhvarf mikit
er til ills vinar,
thótt á brautu búi.
En til gó∂s vinar
liggja gagnvegir,
thótt hann sé firr farinn.

Vápnum ok vá∂um
skulu vinie gle∂jask;
that er á sjálfum synst.
Vi∂rgefendr ok endrgefendr
Erusk lengst vinir
ef that bí∂r at ver∂a vel.

Vatns er thørf,
Theim er til ver∂ar kømr,
Therru, ok thjó∂la∂ar,
Góds um ø∂is--
ef sér geta mætti,
or∂s ok endrthøgu

English translation:

The way to a bad friend
Is usually long and arduous,
Even if they live close by.
Meanwhile, visiting a good friend
Tends to be short and enjoyable,
No matter how far away they live.

Friends should share
Useful tools and protection;
Gifts like these will be appreciated.
Long-lasting will be
This companionship
If all goes well.

Give our newly arrived guest
Water and a place by the fire
From a gracious host.
And if they can get it—
A chance to share their journey,
And a chance for them to listen.
